(A August 2019 letter) Hi XR,
I feel CSDoctor has reasonable job satisfaction. If I were in his role my job satisfaction would be lower.
His sub-domain in finance is niche. Equity volatility data analysis, not a big infrastructure that needs a team to support. I guess it could be considered a glorified spreadsheet. I think the users are front office traders looking at his data to make strategic business decisions.
His technical domain is niche. The team (4 people) made a conscious decision to use c# early on, and has not really changed to java. C# is shunned by West Coast and all internet companies including mobile, cloud and big-data companies. Even Wall St is increasing investment in javascript based GUI, instead of c# GUI.
I see very high career risk in such a role. What if I get kicked out? (Over 7 years the team did kick out at least 2 guys.. Last-in-first-out.) What if I don’t get promoted beyond VP and want to move out? I won’t enjoy such a niche system. It limits career mobility. 路越走越窄.
This is one of the major job dis-satisfactions in my view. Other dis-satisfactions:
- long hours — I think he is not forced to work long hours like 996 in China. He decides to put in extra hours, perhaps to get promotion, meet/exceed expectation of users and managers.
- stress — (due to ownership) CSDoctor is motivated by the stress. (I would not feel such high motivation, if put in his shoes.) It could be a mix of positive stress, worry, external pressure. Hopefully, the mix is more than 50% positive. I was in such an environment once (GS). In hindsight, my mix was slightly below 50% positive on average. See boxer cornered n beaten
- commute — I believe he has 1H+ commute. I feel he has very few choices in terms of jobs closer to home, because his domain is extremely niche.
His major advantage is salary, not really brank. I feel his satisfaction was largely based on exclub status and other people’s envy thereof. It’s based on salary, and job title. There’s no leadership or budget responsibilities. In some buy-side shops, everyone is a director or MD.
Q: Would my family’s livelihood actually need the extra income, when my brbr is like 3?
A: yes my burn rate can shoot up from SGD 4k to … USD 9k or even 12k in some theoretical scenarios.
A: No. At the moment, my brbr has ample buffer.
