Jack Zhang described the old AT&T’s laid-back culture – 4 managers for one foot soldier; short workday + basketball game; contractors working harder than FTE ..

Based on my first-hand observation, Citi also has a very laid-back culture, bureaucratic inefficiency, “wheel spinning” as Srini put it.. so workload is noticeably lighter than other i-banks. If I were to become FTE I would probably choose Citi. Probably low bonus, but I hate bonus.

However, consulting is still a better option for me because

  • Motivation to keep myself up to date and in-demand. The citi-FTE mode can easily decay
  • In each team learn something new … either major new domain, or minor new skill
