java assignment-expression returns assigned value

This feature is inherited from C.

  • eg: return singletonInstance = new MySingleton();
  • eg: a = b = 22;
  • eg: while ((line = reader.readLine()) != null)
  • eg (bigger):
    List<Object> processables;
    while ((processables = retrieveProcessableItems(..)).size() > 0) {/*/}

Incidentally, unlike C, java while-loop header can’t declare variables 😦  Solution — use for-loop 🙂
